Oregon House expels state Rep. Mike Nearman, plotter of state Capitol incursion : news

This is confusing as fuck:

Earlier in the day, a special committee created for the sole purpose of considering Nearman’s fate had approved the resolution unanimously. The 6-0 vote, evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats, sent a clear signal that the Polk County Republicans’ time in the House was coming to a close.

… what?

edit: Okay, Jesus christ, people.

Two sentences, the first sentence:

Earlier in the day, a special committee created for the sole purpose of considering Nearman’s fate had approved the resolution unanimously.

The subject of this sentence is “a special committee”. This committee did something — “approved the resolution unanimously”.

New, second sentence, new subject:

The 6-0 vote, evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats, sent a clear signal that the Polk County Republicans’ time in the House was coming to a close.

The subject of this sentence is “the 6-0 vote”. This subject is further described as “evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats”. The vote did something: “sent a clear signa etc., etc.”

The thing that is “evenly divided” according to the language is “The 6-0 vote”, not the commitee.

If the author wanted to indicate that the committee was evenly divided, they should use English correctly and indicate that that the committee is evenly divided, but cast a unanimous vote.

Other equally stupid sentences:

“The 12-0 verdict was evenly divided, convicting the criminal of murder.”

“At 0-6 due to the entire home team’s players being in the penalty box at the same time, the power play was evenly divided.”
